Mee Chok

Mee Chok (Blessed) was just twenty months old when BLES successfully rescued him.

Mee Chok had only known the inside of the filthy shack he was chained and shackled in. He was snatched away from his birth mother when he was just a few months old, so that the owners could start breaking him in. He was put with another adult female who showed no interest in him and he was never allowed out of the broken down stable. Chained, shackled, and highly distressed, Mee Chok had wounds on his face and ears, was dehydrated, and thin. He was lashing out all over the place, angry and confused by being confined and restricted.

Katherine shared his plight on Facebook and hundreds of people instantly took the baby elephant into their hearts. Photos and messages were sent around the world and donations started flooding in for his rescue.

Upon arrival, Mee Chok was instantly adopted by Pang Tong, Somai and Lom. The four of them formed a strong family unit and were never more than touching distance apart from each other. The transformation in Mee Chok was instant and incredible to witness. In less than 24 hours, that frightened and aggressive baby was gone. Comfortable with human touch and surrounded by loving elephants, Mee Chok proved to us all what it meant to be truly blessed.

After the sudden deaths of Pang Tong and Somai and then later on Tong Jai, Mee Chok started showing extreme signs of aggression, both towards humans and our other rescued elephants. He was growing into a strong bull and his presence around our other elephants was cause for huge concern.

The problem was that all of our other elephants were scared of Mee Chok and refused to stand up to him. This made Mee Chok even more dangerous and so it was decided that Mee Chok would be better off at another facility, where he would be surrounded by other adult bulls, that would be able to put him back in his place and challenge him, when he tried to fight.

The BLES family has stayed in constant contact with the people in charge of Mee Chok’s care and make regular visits to check on his wellbeing.
