Pang Fai

Pang Fai was one of the sweetest and most beautiful old elephants we have ever had the pleasure of caring for at BLES. Rescued in 2018, Pang Fai was a local girl, who had worked in the logging industry in and around Northern Thailand.

Sweet, gentle and curious, Pang Fai had lived in Baan Na Ton Chan, the village where BLES is located, for over 30 years before her owner reached out to Katherine to initiate discussions about retiring her to BLES.

The owner loved Pang Fai deeply, but knew that he was too old to give Pang Fai the attention she needed. Taking care of an elephant is a physically demanding job and due to his age and failing health, he was no longer able to provide for her. He was so sad at the thought of letting her go, but knew in his heart, it was time.

Thanks to an international push for donations to secure Pang Fai's retirement, she got to spend three glorious years with us before she passed.

The rescue of Pang Fai was featured in a programme aired worldwide on Animal Planet, in a series called Dodo Heroes - Katherine's Elephant Eden.
